International Travel Essentials
Everything you need to know before you go — your complete pre-departure checklist.
Your Complete Pre-Departure Checklist
Passports & Important Documents
Make a hard copy of your passport and all important documents and store them separately from the originals. Don't rely solely on your phone — if it's lost or the battery dies, you'll still have backup. Include hard copies of your itinerary, tickets, and emergency contacts.
Trip Mobile App
Open your itinerary link and tap the "App" icon in the top right corner to download the Trip Plans app. Once your itinerary is linked, toggle "offline" mode so you can access your daily schedule and attached documents even without Wi-Fi or cell service.
Google Translate
Download the Google Translate app before you leave. It's invaluable for communicating with locals, reading menus, and navigating signs — especially in countries where English is not widely spoken. You can also download languages for offline use.

Connectivity & Communication
■ International Phone Plan
Review your mobile plan before departure. International roaming can be costly — contact your carrier about an international add-on, or consider purchasing a local SIM card or eSIM at your destination for more affordable data and calling options.
■ WhatsApp
WhatsApp is the most widely used messaging app outside the U.S. Download it before you travel to stay in touch with fellow travelers and family at home — for free over Wi-Fi. This avoids costly international texting and call charges on your mobile plan.

Health & Safety
■ Health Precautions
Pack prescription medications in their original labeled containers. If you have travel protection insurance, bring a printed copy of your policy. If SBTS Travel helped you secure a policy, a copy is attached to your Travely itinerary and accessible through the Trips App.
■ Vaccinations & Health Requirements
Research vaccination requirements and health advisories for your destination well in advance — some require proof of immunization (such as yellow fever) for entry. Visit a travel health clinic or your doctor at least 4–6 weeks before departure. Check the CDC and your destination country's embassy website for the latest requirements. Carry your vaccination record or yellow card with your travel documents.

Money, Power & Packing
■ Currency Exchange
Notify your bank of your travel dates and destinations to prevent card declines. Many local vendors, markets, and transportation providers may not accept credit cards, so carry some local currency cash. Avoid airport exchange counters when possible — local ATMs often offer better rates.
■ Electricity
Bring a universal power adapter and a portable power bank. Most modern electronics (iPhones, iPads, cameras) are dual voltage and only need an adapter. However, appliances like hair dryers or curling irons may need a voltage converter.
■ Luggage & Baggage Tips
Use a luggage tag with your name and contact info — inside and outside your bag. Take a photo of your luggage before checking it so you have a reference if it's lost. Weigh your bags at home to avoid airline overweight fees. Pack a change of clothes and carry copies of documents and medications in your carry-on in case checked baggage is delayed. Consider TSA-approved locks and bright luggage tags or ribbons to identify your bags quickly on the carousel.

Before You Board
■ Emergency Contacts & Preparedness
Save key emergency numbers in your phone before you go: local emergency services (not always 911 abroad), the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate, your airline, travel insurance provider, and your SBTS Travel advisor. Carry a printed list as backup. Register your trip with the U.S. State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at step.state.gov so you can receive safety alerts and be located in an emergency.
✈️ ■ Arrive Early
International flights involve longer check-in lines, customs processing, and boarding procedures. Plan to arrive at the airport at least 3 hours before your scheduled departure. Double-check your terminal and airline requirements in advance, and confirm any passport control or biometric screening steps at your destination airport.
